What’s wrong with this Survey?

Do you notice anything unusual about this “Drive-Thru Speed” survey? Before I tell you the problem, see if you can figure it out yourself by looking at the chart below.

So what’s wrong? — The #1 and #3 rated restaurants DO NOT have drive-thrus.

How can a company be considered tops in their class, when they don’t even offer the service they’re rated so highly for? This is what I kept asking myself this morning after reading the survey. I’ve never seen a Quiznos with a drive-thru. The same for Chipotle. In fact, I remember hearing somewhere that Chipotle was against the whole drive-thru concept, fearing it would negatively affect their image and customer’s experience.

But, maybe I missed something, so I decided to contact the companies. Sure enough, both confirmed they have “zero” drive-thrus. Something is definitely wrong here.

The survey is done by a group called “Corporate Research International” which can be found at CorpRI.com and also MysteryShops.com. You can read the entire fast food results at their other website: RealPeopleRatings.com, along with many other surveys from various industries like Airlines, Hotels, Electronics and Convenience Stores.

I’ve used the CRI website contact form to send a message attempting to clarify this puzzling issue. As soon as I hear back something, I will post an update.

  1. For some reason, maybe because I’m paranoid or something, I try to avoid drive thrus if I can.. I always think they’re going to screw up my order. Plus I feel rushed… when I go inside I feel like I can take my time.
When I saw this survey my first thought was ‘Quiznos has drive thrus?’ I hope these people get back to you… I’d love to hear what they have to say.

  2. The web site also listed chipotle and quiznos for drive thru ‘accuracy’ but they didn’t score as well in that category. The question is how do they score at all… when they don’t have a drive thru to begin with?

    WTF? That’s crazy!

How can we trust any of their other surveys if they publish stuff like that.

  3. Dittio for Boston Market and Dunkin’ Donuts: I’ve never seen a location with a drive-thru.

#1 rated drive-thru doesn’t exist? If the survey came with no explaination, I wouldn’t consider a word on their site credible.

And what’s MysteryShops.com? Are they behind those mystery shopper ads on Yahoo! (with the “Participation Required” disclaimer)? The FTC has an excellent consumer alert about these scams.

  4. Both Dunks and Boston Market certainly do have drive-thrus.

  5. Actually, the quiznos here in bradenton, florida has a drive thru.

  6. That’s funny, they just made up the entire survey!

  7. Chipotle also needs to be congratulated on vastly improving their drive-thru service quarter-to-quarter!

  8. UPDATE — There is 1 Quiznos in Bradenton, Florida, 901 Cortez Rd W, that has a drive-thru. Why does Quiznos home office not know? I cannot answer that.

But, in their defense (of not knowing) it seems to be a special situation where the Franchisee worked out his own lease deal with the landlord-owner of the building which already had a drive-thru window. The store appears to be “For Sale” if anybody’s interested. I believe the asking price is $199,000 for the franchise, plus whatever the lease on the building costs. (that amount was not made public)

Thanks to FFC reader Amber for the tip!
