Cheap Cheeseburger Challenge

Who’s cheap cheeseburger is better? McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s?

This marks the 100th review on FastFoodCritic.com and we decided to do something different. Instead of one person nitpicking a single item, all three editors worked to find which of these 5 commonly available value-priced cheeseburgers is better.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_1.jpg

The Goal: Find the best budget cheeseburger among the industry’s 3 largest chains. Burgers judged on a combination of taste and value. 1 winner, 1 runner-up.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_2.jpg

The competition:

McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger
McDonald’s McDouble
Burger King Whopper Jr. w/Cheese
Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger
Wendy’s Double Stack

We wanted to stay as close to $1 as possible. Due to the crazy economy, the prices on some of these items are literally changing before our eyes. In one case, last week’s 99-cent burger is up to $1.29 (even $1.39) this week in many locations. We’ve done our best to quote and explain current prices (and ranges) for each contender.

Let’s look at them individually, starting with McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_4.jpg

Double Cheeseburger from McDonald’s, $1.19 / $1.29 — Sadly, the legendary 99-cent burger is no longer 99-cents. Everything else remains the same except the price. Two small beef patties, two slices of American cheese, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup. At the old price, it was undeniably an excellent bargain, and it had to be considered a front runner for this competition. But the new price increase might complicate things, especially in a menu segment where cost is top priority.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_6.jpg

McWhat? The new 99-cent “McDouble” is a McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger with only 1 slice of cheese, instead of 2. With rising ingredient costs and the sinking economy, McDonald’s could no longer afford to sell the Double Cheeseburger for 99-cents, so the McDouble was born to take it’s place, and the Double Cheeseburger increased in price. That extra slice of cheese will now cost you 20- to 30-cents extra. This probably comes as surprising and disappointing news to many people. If the price change hasn’t gone into effect at your local McDonald’s, it will soon.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_8.jpg

Whopper Jr. w/Cheese from Burger King, $1.20 / $1.25 — Single small beef patty, one slice American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mayonnaise. The price on the small version of BK’s whopper is stable, at least for now. You can also order it without the cheese, usually 21 to 26 cents cheaper than above.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_10.jpg

Junior Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s, $.99 / $1.39 — One small beef patty, one slice American cheese, one slice bacon (cut in half), lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise. The two burgers from Wendy’s are $1.39 each in some locations, so there’s no guarantee they’re only 99-cents in your city/town. The extra 40-cents can make a big difference in your eating plans when choosing from items in this low price range.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_12.jpg

Double Stack from Wendy’s, $.99 / $1.39 — Two small beef patties, one slice of American cheese, pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup. Same basic ingredients as the McDouble, except the onions are ring sliced instead of minced. Again, the rather large price range on Wendy’s burgers teases our taste buds and wallets.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_14.jpg

The beef patties on all the burgers are very small and thin, with Burger King’s being slightly thicker and heavier than McDonald’s and Wendy’s individual patties. On the other hand, both of those have 2 patties on their burgers versus the single patty on the Whopper Jr., so ultimately they have more beef than BK. Still, the Whopper Jr. has the largest serving size overall, at 170 grams, because it’s bun is bigger and it has more cheese, lettuce and toppings than the others. At first glance, it’s not unusual to think they forgot to put the meat on some of these little burgers because the buns and cheese cover up and hide the small beef patties. By appearance alone, you could easily confuse which patty came from which company, if not for the shape.

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_15.jpg

The buns from McDonald’s and Wendy’s are plain, very similar in size and texture, while Burger King’s bun is a bit larger and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

NOTE: We each ate the five cheeseburgers and wrote down our thoughts separately, without any conversation or messages with each other. Nobody knew what the others had said until the information and votes were gathered to publish this review.

AND THE WINNER IS…

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_18.jpg

The Whopper Jr. w/Cheese from Burger King.

A unanimous choice. All 3 editors named the Whopper Jr. as their top pick in our first Cheap Cheeseburger Challenge. Let’s face it, burgers in the $1 range don’t have a lot going for them. Their main attraction is price. Beef patties on these burgers are tiny and toppings are minimal… so they’re more like burger appetizers. And when you eat them, often times what you notice most is the bread/bun. The Whopper Jr.’s flame broiled beef patty had enough flavor to stand out from the crowd. Among these small pieces of beef, it made the most significant impact in the opinion of all 3 critics. Other things worth noting about BK’s little burger are the full-house of toppings including lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mayo, ketchup, and a sesame seed bun. All together, the Whopper Jr. is a slightly bigger total package than the other burgers.

RUNNER-UP / 2nd Place, goes to…

fast_food_cheap_cheeseburger_challenge_19.jpg

The Junior Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s.

It’s the only burger here that has bacon. Enough said. Bacon makes everything better! Everyone agreed the Junior Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s was a good tasting little burger for 99-cents. And with bacon, lettuce and tomato, it has a nice variety of toppings… but a tiny portion of bacon is not enough to sway our opinions. It’s also difficult for us to wrap our heads around this burger when we don’t know how much our readers will be paying. $.99 is one thing, but $1.39 is too big a difference.

Interesting Fact — Our 1st and 2nd place burgers are the only 2 among the 5 which had a single beef patty. The other 3 burgers were doubles. Proving that flavor of meat and variety of ingredients were more important than number of patties.

Cheese — The cheese on all the burgers is American, and the slices are not very big. Frankly we didn’t notice much of a difference in flavor among the cheeses, though 2 of 3 editors gave the Whopper Jr. a slight edge in taste. The Double Cheeseburger from McDonald’s was the only burger with 2 slices of cheese. We all agree it’s nice and cheesy, but ultimately having double the cheese was not enough to win.

Veggies — 3 of the 5 burgers have only pickles and onions, including Wendy’s Double Stack and both burgers from McDonald’s. There’s not much to report on those. They all tasted fine. One editor noted that McDonald’s burgers have too strong of a pickle taste. The Whopper Jr. from Burger King and Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy’s both have Lettuce and Tomato. Wendy’s includes a small single whole-leaf of lettuce while BK uses shredded lettuce. No complaints. Both were fairly crisp and fresh tasting. The same can be said for their tomatoes, though the size of slices will vary from sandwich to sandwich and store to store. Neither of these companies is likely to win any awards for their produce quality, but they still do a satisfactory job.

Final Comments — Next time you are hungry for a good cheeseburger but only have a pocket full of change, any of these 5 burgers will probably satisfy you, but we think the best choice is the Whopper Jr. with Cheese from Burger King. It has enough beef flavor that it makes you feel like you’re eating a real burger. It also has good toppings and plenty of them, and the best bun in this class. Among these small burgers, we felt the Whopper Jr. provided the most satisfying, big-burger-like taste.

All these burgers are decent tasting, solid values. None of them are bad. Wendy’s Double Stack finished in last position, but this was a tight race from top to bottom, so that should not be interpreted as a major knock against it. As expected, the recent split of the McDouble / Double Cheeseburger at McDonald’s had an interesting effect on votes. We suspect it’s also having an interesting effect at the drive-thrus and ordering counters across the country, but it’s too early to say for sure. Stay tuned.

Final Standings

#1 — Burger King Whopper Jr. w/Cheese
#2 — Wendy’s Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger
#3 — McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger
#4 — McDonald’s McDouble
#5 — Wendy’s Double Stack

  1. wow, really good read…i find it really interesting that of the 5 listed the “best” burger health wise was the only burger with bacon.

Are the BK Rodeo cheese burgers not available for 99 cents there? A cheeseburger with onion ring and bbq sauce just has a lot more flavor than most 99 cent offerings. When my wife and I are in need of cheap burgers we tend to grab a sack of those rather than Wendy’s or McDonald’s.

  2. John, Ryan, Timothy,

That was cool. You should do a “team” review again sometime.

I’m hungry for a cheeseburger now at 8 a.m. lol

  3. I enjoyed this informative and fun read. Keep up the good work, guys!

  4. Ahh, excellent.. More side by side reviews, please? I’m still waiting for the ‘Bacon Comparison Challenge’ :)

  5. Agreed; McDonalds blows.

    Congrats on the 100th review!

  6. Wow! Great and informative review. I love it. I’ve always wanted to do something like this myself. Thanks for that and let’s look forward to the special 1000 review :)

  7. […] intrigued by today’s post by The Fast Food Critic which is a comparison of 5 different cheap cheeseburgers. It’s a duel between Burger […]

  8. I’m going to get my burger, NOW!
    Thanks.

  9. Great review! In my current financial crisis I still have fast-food burger cravings and will opt for the ‘value’ versions. My immediate neighborhood only has McDonald’s outlets, and the cost of driving miles to another chain for a cheap burger pretty much eliminates the savings.

  10. awesome review fellas. never would have guessed that mcdonalds wouldn’t have been in the top 2, but looks like the price raise may have ruined it for them. keep up the good work, and again congrats on the 100th!

  11. I really, REALLY like the side-by-side comparison format. May we please have more? Onion rings? Fries? Big Burgers? Great way to stack up the competition out there.

Thanks for the last 100. Best wishes on the next 200..

  12. I have to say that burgers are not really my choice when it comes to the top chains. If i want a burger i just go In and Out or Farmer Boys.

With that said, I do eat the occasional midnight menu Double Double from Mcs or a burger from Wendys.

I wont even step foot into BK for anything other than Onion Rings, CHicken Fries, and Hershey Pies.

    My list would go
    1. Mcs Double Double
    2. Wendys original 99 cent Cheeseburger Deluxe
    3. Wendys Bacon Cheeseburger

Thats basically it. Not a big burger person unless its fresh.

  13. dang, this is an amazing post… I had been thinking of doing this on cheap eats for years but just couldn’t find the time to visit all those fast food joints at once (let alone eat all those burgers) congrats on #100 as well…

  14. Congratulations on the big 100! I thoroughly enjoyed the review.

The photography is great. I love seeing all three patties side by side.

I’d have a tough time deciding between the Jr Whopper and McD’s Double Cheeseburger. I haven’t eaten at Wendy’s for years because I don’t have one in town.

I noticed you left out Jack in the Box. I believe they have a cheap cheeseburger too. Not that it would win but it would have been great to include for comparison’s sake.

Also missing is Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s and I think I know why: I don’t know of anything they sell for around a buck.

Great review guys! Happy New Year.

  15. I, too, would like to see you guys compare these against the cheap Jack in the Box offering. The meat isn’t bad and it looks to me like there may be a little more of it.

  16. Great review!

For future reference, Sonic has pretty good cheap burgers as well. I think they are half price on certain nights too.

  17. Good job. My list is much different though. I’d just flip the results then move the Whopper Jr to third.
It does annoy me the the Wendy’s Double Stack is on the Wendy’s website under .99 cent burgers but my Wendy’s charge $1.39 AND they have yet to display it on the menu board.

  18. […] head-to-head for cheeseburger throw down. This review was big number one hundred for FFC, click here to check it out. :Burger, Cheeseburger, Fast Food, […]

  19. drpep:
Yeah the Double Stack was actually $1.49 where I got it. The Jr. Bacon Ch. was $1.39. That’s not even the worst part, Wendy’s “value” burgers have shrunk! That was definitely a big strike against them.

  20. Yup, the shrinking “value” burgers at Wendy’s is why I would place it last.

  21. I personally go for the mcdonalds double cheese or wendy’s snacker stacker.

If you live near a Checkers or Rally’s they have a great chili cheeseburger for about the cost of these burgers

  22. It’s weird that some people are getting charged 1.39 at Wendy’s for their burgers. They’ve just started some ads portraying the CRRRAAAAZY value of their .99 burgers. I was just there today, and I was charged a buck.

  23. I’m really surprised at the choice of the Whopper Jr. as #1. Don’t get me wrong I love the burger, but I have always had a problem with the BK cheese. It seems to have the same consistency of nacho cheese from the 7-11. I make it a point to avoid the cheese there.

  24. Wow, surprised mcdonalds didn’t win, the BK cheese burgers here are awful (it’s called hungry jacks in Australia)

Also, when you’re after a cheese burger, you don’t want lettuce/tomato, right?

  25. James,

Does this mean the “King” is not the company mascot for “Hungry Jack”?

I didn’t know Burger King had a different name in Australia. I wonder if they use the same food ingredients as America. Maybe the burgers over there are made from kangaroo meat. :P

  26. Francis,

The Australian McDonald’s burger experience may be better than we get in the US- the patties may be freshly cooked like in Europe.

In the US, McD’s grills meat patties en masse and then put them in warmers. When it comes time to prepare the burger, the warmed patties are placed on the burger and the whole thing is microwaved in a multi-thousand watt oven.

The difference in taste and texture between the US and Europe is night and day. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a slap in the face to the country that made McDonald’s what it is today.

So, this review is definitely US-centric. James reports that even the Burger King burgers are different than in the good ol’ US of A.

  27. Sadly, I don’t live near any Carls Jr, Hardees, or In & Out. I would absolutely be checking out those burgers if I did live near them though!

  28. Great 100th review guys. You should be proud of yourselves!

    Heres to another 100!

  29. I am not pleased with this so-called independent taste test! I believe the Burger King has used his power to force your decision. And Wendy, she is one angry broad…so I am not surprise of your cowardice. Mickey D’s is #1 now and forever!!!!!

  30. Grats on 100!

I agree with BK being on top for flavor between the 3. The lettuce makes a big difference, at least for me.

Sonic does serve great stuff, even on their value menu. Too bad they’re not prevalent. :(

  31. Oh, I miss Jack in the Box for their tacos — haven’t seen one in nearly 15 years since I moved from Hawaii. While numerous states have JitB, most states don’t have them. :(

  32. […] See original here: Cheap Cheeseburger Challenge […]

  33. What a great review! I agree with BK having the best tasting burger. I love the flame broiled patty. Not to mention the meat itself is good. I’ve picked out way too many fat and gristle pieces out of McD’s burgers too many times…GROSS!
